Hey there,
Things are buzzing at The Grinning Frog headquarters - we are in the process of packing up for the office move. We get the new keys on Monday and will be transferring the office through the course of next week. We optimistically think we can do it all in two days? We will see...
Alongside that, we have a brand new solo play game coming out on Kickstarter on Friday 16 August. As a nod to the brilliant Alien franchise, we have decided to launch the campaign on the day the new Alien film is released and you will find many elements from the Alien films in our game - flamethrowers, motion detectors and deadly alien threats!
Xenos Genesis has been built using the Zilight game engine that many of you reading this will have enjoyed in the Zilight zombie games, and most recently in Final Quest. We've actually put the core game together pretty quickly but the ideas have been rolling around for quite a while in different game drafts we've been testing.
The game sees you waking up, injured and groggy onboard a ship where you don't remember the layout. You build that through moving around the ship and discovering locations, whilst gathering equipment and fending off alien attacks.
As long-time fans will know, we don't copy directly but we are happy to pay homage to the stories and movies that we have loved over the years. Xenos Genesis is a love letter to Alien and Aliens, specifically, but it also brings in elements from Doom, not to mention being set in our Starship Scavenger universe. Setting it in the universe we have spent a year building made it an easy job to construct the backstory and it helped balance the aliens, robots and weapon options.
The campaign page can be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thegrinningfrog/xenos-genesis
We are truly excited about this and the game comes with counters, a game mat and a custom deck of cards - or simply buy the rulebook (which comes with the game mat) and use a regular deck of playing cards.
The campaign will fulfil in November with the time between now and then being spent play-testing and game balancing.
And yet more space adventure:
We are also working on an additional adventure for Starship Scavengers called The Last Voyage of the Lucky Star, which sees a passenger liner struck by meteors and then invaded by deadly skrex (multi-limbed and clawed aliens)...
A solar system boxed set that includes a foldout map, guidebook, NPCs and details of over twenty planets in the main system that Starship Scavengers is set in.
Character options come in the form of a book providing six alien races that can be used as player characters. Unlike many RPGs, these races will have positives, as well as negatives for each race.
We are also working on Firebird Down, which was recently successfully Kickstartered and is an adventure for Starship Scavengers. Along with that comes issue 3 of the Frontier Gazette. Those will be released in October.
That's a lot of sci-fi and we are loving it inside the office. We haven't forgotten other genres either and if you play urban fantasy or superhero RPGs then you should check out our Modern NPC campaign here (Free NPC samples available on the campaign page.)
If fantasy is more your thing then The Oracle is available right now on Kickstarter where it offers RPG supplements ranging from Cities to Coasts via Deserts. That has only two days left at the time of writing. You can see it here.
Once we get into the new office and get settled we aim to structure our blog posts and social media activity to ensure that we are sharing more freebies and letting people know about upcoming projects further in advance.
The new office represents a whole new phase for the business and I want to say thank you to everyone reading this who has supported us on our journey. Were if not for your help and support, we could not have done this. Thank you.
Until next time, keep gaming.
Stephen
